TUC0602: Designing a Problem-Based Learning Environment to Facilitate Science Subjects
Session Code:
TUC0602
Session Title:
Designing a Problem-Based Learning Environment to Facilitate Science Subjects
Speaker(s):
Prof Henry CHUNG (Department of Electronic Engineering)
Session Outline:
This workshop will discuss the design of a problem-based-learning (PBL) environment for science subjects. Science subjects, such as Physics, involve many different areas, including mechanics, optics and electricity, and it is essential to enable students to grasp the relationships among these various areas. However, students seem to lack the ability or motivation to go beyond factual knowledge to a deeper understanding of the subject material, such as this inter-relationship among areas. Indeed, students seem to have difficulty connecting basic principles and concepts to their essential applications. Thus, this workshop will discuss the use of student-centered learning methods that can help students to "learn to learn", as well as to work cooperatively in groups in order to seek solutions to real problems. The ultimate goals are for students to learn and be able to apply the disciplinary content, develop critical thinking abilities, and acquire the skills of life-long learning, communication and team-building. Speakers will use Physics problems to illustrate the implementation of a PBL system.
