Session Title: Pedagogical Use of Advanced Technologies in Formal and Special Education

Session Outline: The AIMtech Centre at City University of Hong Kong has been working with the Quality Education Fund and the Education and Manpower Bureau towards a methodology of exploiting Web-based learning to deeply embed IT with appropriate pedagogy into teaching and learning, as well as a tool to support students' individualised learning. The first part of this course will present this methodology and the experience gained while deploying it in practice in the teaching and learning of English Language at several schools. The second part of the course will highlight recent work done in applying virtual reality and smart ambience technologies to help children work through their stresses and to build confidence. The final part of the course will include a short hands-on session with a Web-based learning platform, WELS, that supports individualised learning, as well as a laboratory demonstration of the smart ambience technology that can potentially be applied to help children with learning difficulties.
