Session Outline:
Assessment is an integral part of our teaching activity. However, the majority of current assessment formats are directed towards evaluation of how well the students have learned. Moreover, some of them such as mid-term quiz and end of the year examination do not lead to providing feedback for students to improve on their learning. By contrast, formative assessment vs. summative assessment can help students to strive towards deeper learning. In this workshop, we shall examine briefly the principles of summative and formative assessments and discuss some practical applications of the latter to drive better assessment practices.
