Session Title: Understanding News: Sociological Perspectives and the Media Industry in Hong Kong

Session Outline: This course discusses how audiences can critically examine news coverage by drawing upon key perspectives in the sociology of news. News will be understood in terms of: 1) the production processes behind the news; 2) the structure of the media industry in Hong Kong; and 3) social and cultural contexts at large. Throughout the course, the relevance of the theoretical perspectives will be illustrated through the use of concrete, real-life examples.
