TUC0626: Ecological Risk Assessment of Persistent Toxic Substances: Methods and Case Studies
Session Code:
TUC0626
Session Title:
Ecological Risk Assessment of Persistent Toxic Substances: Methods and Case Studies
Speaker(s):
Prof Paul K S LAM (Department of Biology and Chemistry)
Session Outline:
As one of the most densely populated and rapidly industrialised areas in the world, the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region is under severe pressure due to persistent toxic substances, such as trace metals, persistent organic pollutants and other chemicals of emerging concern. This seminar examines the procedures involved in the assessment of ecological risks caused by these contaminants. Specifically, the potential risks of persistent toxic substances to the Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphins (Sousa Chinensis) that inhabit the western waters of Hong Kong, as well as the wildlife, particularly waterbirds, on and around the Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay Ramsar site, will be assessed using a probabilistic approach.
