TUC0628: Modern Classification of Life: What Has Happened to the Five Kingdoms?
Session Code: TUC0628
Session Title: Modern Classification of Life: What Has Happened to the Five Kingdoms?
Speaker(s): Dr Desmond K O'TOOLE (Department of Biology and Chemistry)
Session Outline:

Until relatively recently, all living things in the world of Biology were classified into Five Kingdoms. However, in the 1980s, there was a huge split in the world of bacteria that required a re-think of the classification of living things. The change also led to a re-think of the classification of all living things, including other microscopic organisms.

This course will outline the history of the development of the Five Kingdoms and cover the scientific developments that have led to a complete re-examination of the Five Kingdoms model. As the proposals for change are still being disputed, both sides of the argument will be presented.
