Session Code:
TUC0637
Session Title:
The Use of Condition Health Monitoring and Nondestructive Test in Industries
Speaker(s):
Dr Peter W TSE (Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management)
Session Outline:
Providing maintenance for and inspecting machines and processes is critical to improving services and production quality, reducing repair costs and downtime, and ensuring safety. Proper maintenance and service planning can achieve these goals by minimising a machine's downtime, protecting operators from accidents and reducing inventory. This type of maintenance can be established using a Condition Health Monitoring (CHM) system that employs Nondestructive Test (NDT) methods. Companies and public utilities that are equipped with such a system receive an early warning of an unhealthy machine or abnormal process and can identify the cause(s) of the fault(s). Moreover, the system can predict the life span of a defective system, and advise the operator on the most convenient schedule for servicing so that any interruption to production is minimised and the stock of spare parts is kept at the optimum level. Case studies of machinery and structures related to public utilities, mass transportation, building services, chemical plants and manufacturing, etc. will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the CHM and NDT. Currently, more than 30 companies are using the system.
